Adventures in Gallatin Gateway, Montana

320 Guest Ranch

Everything you need to know about visiting Gallatin Gateway and exploring Big Sky Montana

Flying into Bozeman

Montana is one of the top 3 most rural states in the country but easily one of the most spectacularly beautiful ones. Everything you see just makes you appreciate the magnificence of our world and wonder how something so awe inspiring can even exist. With that being said, to truly get the experience of it all, you have to get to the back country.

This meant flying into Bozeman Airport (which is not actually in Bozeman, but in Belgrade) and arranging a driver to pick us up and drive us to the ranch where we would be staying.

I’m glad we had a driver, as I felt safer being with a driver who was familiar with the mountain roads we would be taking. Most of the roads are single lane highways with directional traffic separated only by thin double yellow lines. Our driver was telling us insurance in Montana is extremely expensive due to having a higher number of fatal accidents. As if perfectly timed, we past a truck on its side that had clearly been in a head on collision and was crumpled like a tin can. The downside of renting a vehicle though means you need to be sure to stop by Costco and stalk up on snacks and essentials before heading into the mountain, as there won’t be anything else for miles. Our driver was kind enough to allow us to do this as well. The return trip was arranged with the same company and we had the pleasure of being driven by our first driver’s wife. (Thank you to Ryan’s aunt for arranging the driver)

320 Guest Ranch

For our trip we stayed at 320 guest ranch (see website). Our cabin and flights were booked as a Christmas gift from Ryan’s mother last year. Man what a gift it truly ended up becoming. I don’t think Ryan and I have felt that relaxed in… who knows when. The 5 days we spent here felt like being transported to another dimension where time didn’t exist and our problems were far far away.

The ranch is about halfway between Big Sky (a ski resort town) and Yellowstone National Park. It’s a pretty remote ranch deep in the Montana mountain forests. It’s surrounded by rolling hills topped with trees that make the air smell sweet enough to taste. The sprawling complex is dotted with rustic, yet fully equipped, cabins. Some cabins back up against the trails while others sit right on the river’s edge. Our cabin was right in front of the horse pens. I’m sitting in my bed watching them graze as I write this post. The ranch offers several activities such as horseback riding and soap making classes. I recommend bringing your own snacks. While the ranch does offer a DELICIOUS breakfast spread each day, outside of that they only have a cafe open until 2 and one restaurant/saloon open from 5-10. The drinks aren’t too bad but the food is VERY expensive.

The Scenery

While Montana has always been on my dream list of places to go, we ended up specifically here by a chance of Fate. Ryan’s cousin’s wedding was to be held here and from the moment we got here it was clear why they chose it as their wedding venue.

It’s peaceful and serene, yet so alive. What better kind of marriage to have

The Wedding

The wedding was absolutely magical. It wasn’t until the wedding that I discovered our their story mirrors Ryan’s and my own.

They met online (Ryan and I met online) in 2020 (also in 2020) during the pandemic. She delayed their date by one day (I delayed my date with ryan by a day as well). I call ryan, Cocobean. He calls her cocobean. Their story unraveled in Phoenix at the exact time ours was in Albuquerque. Ryan and his cousin even have the same birthday, if it can be any stranger 😅

Despite any coincidences, their story is uniquely theirs and so incredibly beautiful. I love the story of why they chose to get married in Montana and it made it all the more special to be invited to share in this with them.

Exploring Big Sky

One of the activities offered at the Ranch is a guided tour by horseback. We had initially intended to partake in this but didn’t realize we needed to sign up in advance. Oh well 🤷🏻‍♀️ we ended up finding a different sort of adventure in Big Sky.

Big Sky is a mountain resort town similar in feel to aspen or vail. We hitched a ride into town with Ryan’s Aunt and Uncle. They are the sweetest couple, the kind who walk through the world as a team, a couple I aspire to one day be like. It’s not a large shopping strip but you could definitely kill a few hours here. It’s a similar set up to Larimer’s Square in Denver Colorado with stringed lights cross crossing the road overhead. While we were here, we discovered Cowboy Coffee and got the best iced coffee we ever had. We also picked up matching souvenir hats, and a Christmas ornament at a gift shop that was hand etched by a local artist from recycled Christmas trees.

What I wore/packed

If you’re traveling to Montana you NEED to watch the weather and pack accordingly. the weather in Montana can change on a dime and you could have both snow and a sunny day with a high of 80 in a single week.

We had rain the whole time and temps ranging from 46-62 degrees. Solid Fall temps and a drastic difference from the triple digit heat we were escaping in Albuquerque. I recommend packing layers, a good waterproof hiking boot/shoe, and a rain coat. If you end up needing to buy one here, you’ll spend over $200 (if you end up in this situation and you can’t afford Patagonia go to Costco in Bozeman).

January Home Projects

January is the month of resolutions. Mine? To deliver blog post on time 😂 I clearly make no promises. While I am not super huge on New Year’s resolutions per se (you should better your self all year), I do see January as a reset and a fresh start. It’s why, despite my love of Christmas, the decor/tree come down on Dec 26th. It’s because I like to enter the year with a clean house and a fresh start. Although, it’s impossible to see that clean house and not feel like something is missing after 3 months of decor (Halloween, thanksgiving, Christmas).

In comes the project season. I inevitably cannot sit still and my insane type A personality must always be doing something. With the drastic slow down from the holidays I end up with so much free time and a nice clean slate to work with, so I fill it with projects. This January I tackled our pantry/fridge and our bathroom.

Pantry project

I love my Ryan to the end of this universe and while I’ll never complain of this directly to him (it’s really small potatoes) it drives me bonkers…. You guess it! The typical boyfriend/husband thing. They’re always in a rush and they don’t close lids, seal bags, and they put things away empty! I wanted a system so simple that it was boyfriend/9year old proof and would stay tidy. The first thing I’ll talk about is this AMAZING spice rack.

Those little spice organizers that spin are cute and all… but I don’t have that kind of counter space. We live in a city condo, and I hate clutter so those are not an option. Another down side to those is that if you have anything in an unusual shape or size it doesn’t fit. And let’s be honest, anyone who actually uses their kitchen would need like 3 of those things.

Amazon 6 tier spice rack

This spice rack has it all. It’s 6 tiers and the bottom three are wider than the top three for larger items. There is definitely some assembly required but it was super simple and easy. You can also choose the order of the tiers and arrange the larger ones on top of you prefer (you’re a monster if you do this though). My only complaint is that the rack makes noise when opening or closing the door now. It comes with a way to secure the rack directly to the door or wall, but we rent so I’m not doing that. Overall, I am satisfied because we were able to free up a whole shelf of our pantry!

The can rack on the top right

Do you see my can rack? It’s on the top right hand side. We don’t have many cans on it right now but this little rack holds them at an angle to they drop down to the front and can fit three rows of cans across and 5-6 back

The after!!

For the pantry I wanted the lower shelves to be primarily a self serve station so that Theresa can reach her favorite snacks and get them herself. It also makes packing her lunch a breeze because I can just quickly grab everything I need. While the canvas bins are prettier, I felt clear was best for food. With clear bins we can easily see if something is running low or going bad. Also, if we can’t see it, we don’t eat it and it gets wasted. Out of sight out of mind! The open bins are great for awkward items like juice boxes, fruit snack, pop tarts and other individually packaged items.

These tall-short standing jars keep food airtight and fresh. When you bring home chips you just empty them into one of these jars and 👏no. More. Bag. Clips👏 I bought three kinds at different price points to review. I went with plastic for all three because I wanted light weight (we have metal shelves) I am also known to be accident prone and break anything glass. I’m a bull in a china cabinet.

  • $40: The best value is from Amazon. For just $40 you get a complete set of 3 large, 3 medium large, 3 medium small, and 3 small. That’s 12!!! My only complaint is the super tall ones knock over easily, especially when empty. The Amazon set is also the ONLY set that came with a set of labels and a marker
  • $$20 (was25): This Target set is actually not as great a deal as the Amazon set. This set only comes with 5 jars, so per jar comes to about 5 per jar vs 3 with the Amazon set
  • $$$112.00 OXO set from Bed, Bath, and Beyond averages about $12 per jar. These are by far the nicest. They are are a thicker plastic that is far more clear/Glass like. They seal well and come with a easy open pop top lid. This is the brand I went with for the cereal containers. I would say they ARE worth the splurge IF you can afford it. If not, the Amazon ones really are a spectacular deal.

For the fridge (sorry, this photo is not the greatest example 😅) I used more of the same clear bins used in the pantry self serve.

The Garden Bathtub Project

Theresa could not resist and had to try it out

The bathroom project was COMPLETELY unplanned. I was at Walmart to buy groceries and noticed that the garden center was having a sale. They had so many beautiful, mature plants for 20-25 dollars! These are normally 30-50. We have a free standing garden tub in the corner of our bathroom. There is this corner of lost space behind the tub that are not using for anything and I had the idea to turn our garden tub into a Garden Tub

This bath caddy from Amazon is luxury at its finest. This is living folks and you NEED this. It has a spot for everything. Tablet, wine, towel, bath products and it adjust to fit any tub! Even in my tub it still has room to extend further. You can be a princess and watch princess diaries in the tub like me lol

Products featured on Caddy. Bubble bar and moisturizer jars are LUSH and the bath bombs are LaVonBlu. Check out the LUSH store in uptown or head down to my personal favorite LaVonBlu located right here in Nob Hill. LaVonBlu has everything from lip balm, bath salts, bath bombs, soaps, everything! Not to mention you’ll see her adorable fluffy puppies while you’re there and you’ll be supporting a local ABQ business. Check out her website here https://www.lavonblu.com

The finished product
While in the garden Center I could resist this beautiful Majesty Palm for our living room. These plants are great for purifying toxins from the air and will love a sunny space in your home
